Upon hearing of Aaron Paul’s participation in the upcoming Need for Speed film I was taken aback. We all recognize Aaron Paul from the hit series ‘Breaking Bad‘, and I didn’t feel that this movie would utilize the talent I knew he had. Even so, there is more to be said on this film.
This movie is full of action, thrilling scenes, and hilarious characters.
Aaron Paul plays Tobey Marshall, a local mechanic that is well-known for his driving skills and workmanship. When he finds himself struggling to save his father’s garage, he partners with Dino Brewster, a pompous ex-NASCAR driver. Misfortune ensues as Tobey is framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and lands in prison. The story unfolds as predictably as you would expect, but that didn’t make this movie horrible. After the initial feeling that I was watching Jesse Pinkman had subsided, I was drawn into the world of Tobey Marshall. Paul’s brilliant display of emotion is one of the finer aspects of this movie, and engages the viewer in the story. Aside from Paul, the character of Benny is extremely entertaining and serves as one of Marshall’s crew. You may recognize the actor portraying Benny as hip hop artist Kid Cudi, I, however, did not until after the fact.
After watching, my low expectations of this movie were replaced with satisfaction. I found that Aaron Paul’s acting draws you into the world of Tobey Marshall, and the heart-pounding race scenes, along with some humor, keep you there. As previously mentioned, this is a film that is arguably predictable. Luckily, the good aspects keep your mind from such worries. There were also a few cheesy or uninteresting scenes due to poor dialogue that seemed out of place and could have been omitted. Nevertheless, I recommend going to see this film and enjoying the great qualities of it, which outweigh the bad.
