Leonardo DiCaprio faces Native Americans, Tom Hardy, and the cold in ‘The Revenant’

From the very first trailer, we’ve all expected a spectacle. The Revenant team delivers something raw and shot only in natural light. Based on the true story of a real life fur trapper, The Revenant follows Hugh Glass’ story of revenge and survival. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, the adventure of these frontiersmen is captured on an epic scale that director Alejandro Iñárritu thrusts the audience into. The Revenant also stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter.

Hugh Glass: As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe… keep breathing.

On the surface, The Revenant is all about survival. The freezing temperatures, the harsh terrain, and his fatal injuries, all work against Hugh Glass as he navigates back to camp. Underneath that story is the relationship between a father and his son. Glass’ bond with his son, a “half-breed,” connects him to the indigenous people of the land, which contrasts the racist comments by Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and the French explorers. And, connected to that relationship, Glass finds himself in the midst of a spiritual struggle between the White hunters/trappers and the Native Americans.

The most prominent actors in The Revenant deliver solid performances, which is to be expected from a film at the center of 2016 Oscar race. DiCaprio committed 110% to his role as Hugh Glass, and there have been various articles about his 100-pound bear fur costume and consumption of raw bison liver. DiCaprio also describes the process of shooting The Revenant as one of the most difficult things he has ever done.

Most audiences will be expecting a thrilling story about revenge and survival, which is true, but that is all accompanied by brutality and gore. As seen in the trailer, Glass is viciously mauled by a grizzly bear and he is forced to deal with those grave injuries throughout the film. There are also some other elements that make this film unsuitable for young children and teens, which can be inferred from the film’s rating. If you are easily upset by blood, you may want to avoid this film.
