“It Follows” is the best 80s horror movie released in 2015

Blink and you might miss the limited release of indie horror film It Follows. Initially openening in only two cities nationwide and slated for video on demand release today. However, due to high critic and audience scores the film was allowed a wider release to almost 1,000 theaters nationwide. Luckily, my favorite theater was one of the ones to get it.

It Follows is not horror as many of you may imagine. It is not filled over-the-top gore, torture and disturbing imagery with a thin storyline and laughable acting. The world writer/director David Robert Mitchell creates is simple, easy to digest and squirm inducing throughout. With a relatable cast of mostly young unknown actors and a shape shifting slow-paced but relentless unseen force It Follows successfully creates tension in every scene. Maika Monroe, from one of my favorite lesser known films last year The Guest, gives an amazing performance as the cursed protagonist.

It Follows is the best homage to 80s horror I’ve seen since… 80s horror movies.

If you’ve seen any horror movie ever you know that sex almost always equals death. Quite literally so in It Follows as this ever pursuing entity is passed person to person through sexual intercourse. Essentially making this monster the words most terrifying sexually transmitted disease. Given the use of sex as a form of transmission you might think this movie contains a lot of gratuitous sex and nudity. Though there is nudity in this film, it is never sexual. In fact, for of the five scenes that involve nudity in someway are related to the monster inhabiting the likeness of a naked man or woman. The fifth shows a boy in his late teens looking through a “Playpen” magazine. For a full content breakdown, make sure to visit the links below.

I truly enjoyed It Follows as an interesting fresh addition to the horror genre much like The Babadook last year. But, I understand I may be in the minority here. Due to the graphic and sometimes disturbing nature of this film, it’s very hard to recommend it. Know what you can handle, do some research and choose whether or not you want to see this.

I've been doing some form of ministry since 2000. For 13 years I was involved in the youth ministry at Cordova Neighborhood Church as everything from youth intern to youth pastor. God has led me and my lovely wife Bethany to Church of the Foothills where I currently reside as the Digital Publishing Coordinator. I'm excited to see where God leads my wife and I.
