Tom Cruise returns to the sci-fi realm in the action-filled thriller Edge of Tomorrow. The film follows Cruise’s character William Cage who is a mere spokesperson for the war against an invading alien species known as ‘Mimics.’ Without spoiling the movie for everyone, the “resetting of time” aspect is strange but comes to make total sense by the end. The various elements of science-fiction, future technology, and action sequences are combined into a wonderfully done movie.
I decided to experience this movie in IMAX, and the extra money is always well spent. The explosions, incessant gunfire, and surprise bursts of noise are felt in a very real way. Aside from the IMAX experience, the film’s effects and score were also well done. Edge of Tomorrow makes use of the current trend: exoskeleton suits. These mechanized suits give ordinary humans almost superhuman abilities, and becomes the world’s way for defeating this alien invasion.
Tom Cruise partners up with Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow as the lead characters for much of the film. Their humorous banter and emotional turmoil really drive the latter half of this movie in a satisfying way, paving the way for the inevitable “happy ending.” Another great tool that this film utilized fully was the time reset notion. This not only provided our protagonists with a way to defeat the aliens, but also a means for comedic relief and tear-jerking moments within the film. I’d definitely say that I expected this film to be one thing, but turned out to exceed my expectations.
Though I didn’t expect much out of this film, Edge of Tomorrow proved to be a daring, action-packed movie with its own share of laughs and sentimentality. It also delves into the same idea that X-Men: Days of Future Past explored. Can we change our fate, or are we already on a predestined path?
