After Devin Shelton left Emery, the future direction of the band was indefinite. What was once filled with somewhat sweet back up vocals was now replaced with hard and harsher screams. This brought Toby Morrell front and center on lead vocals and Josh Head delivering even more signature screams. We Do What We Want took on a much darker tone than the normal Emery. They take their new sound to the edge of post-hardcore similar to older Underoath and Write This Down. The new Emery may throw some fans of their older material for a loop, but most will be able to glean something worthwhile from this album.
