The spirit-filled hardcore band out of Fargo, ND, Atrocities, just released their debut EP “Set Free,” and I have to tell you… it surprised me. They have a heavy Sex Pistols influence, yet they are heavy and original in their own way.
It’s time to change your ways,
It’s time to destroy this hate.
The first track titled “Pharisee” features Dylan Raftvold of With a Voice, and I’m sure it will turn some heads. This is an exquisite way to open this EP declaring that self-righteousness is not the way.
Why would you bow down and worship these idols?
Knowing that Christ is the one that can save you
Your life is consumed, by material things
At the end of the world, you’ll see
Your idols are nothing
The second track entitled “Consumed” is about letting worldly idols consume us, and draw us away from God and His plan. This song was an original demo that was featured on the God’s Love for Hardcore winter compilation.
I am weak, you are my strength
Pull me out of this grave that I’ve dug for myself
“Wasting Away” the third and most impressive track on this EP is about conviction and repentance. It is a very short, but unforgettable track. The fourth track is called “Truth Be Told” and the lyrics tell us the truth about ourselves and our world, not the story that the world tells us.
You live in a world that you question
False hope enclosed by broken hearts
This world’s falling to pieces at the hands of evil
The final track, named “Atrocities,” reminds us that even if we don’t believe in God He is still above us, and all of our faults make us atrocities to Him.
There is a way to be set free
There is a God that stands above me
I know you don’t believe me
And all I see is atrocities
This is a very well done album for such a new band. Speaking from experience, they are just as bold live as they are on the album. Atrocities are part of a wave of really bold Christian bands coming into the scene and I can’t wait to see how these guys grow.
