There have been many who have tried similar things to what ChugChugWob does, but none do it as well as ChugChugWob. Dubstep metal is something that has intrigued me since the Suicide Silence “Big Chocolate” remixes, but it seemed to be the only good sounding mix of the 2 musical styles. Even on Asking Alexandria’s “Stepped-up” and “Scratched” album, Big Chocolate’s remix of “A Prophecy” was the only one that wasn’t overly repetitive and annoying.
I’m stepping into beastmode / I’m giving up myself to follow God’s way / Get on my level or get out of my way
A few years ago, I heard a ChugChugWob song and wasn’t overly impressed by it, but when I ran into the guys at Sunshine Festival, I decided to look them up again. Turns out, they had a new album of more professionally recorded and produced songs. About 20 seconds into the first track, my jaw hit the floor. This band is exceptionally metal as well as having some crazy electronics. I didn’t know whether to head bang or dance… so I did both.
It’s an epidemic and we are the cure / Saving face won’t save your soul / If Your love is a lighthouse, then shine in me For all the lost to see
Musically, I believe they still have work to do, but for how young the band is, I would say that their album “Redemption” is exceptional. Production quality was a lot better than their older tracks, but could still use some work. Vocally, this album sounded very raw, which is how I like vocals best, there’s just something more human about imperfect vocals. The clean vocals were a little pitchy at times, but overall they sounded great, at times even like Craig Owens of Chiodos. Instrumentally, this band is very diverse in style and beat.
I’m being hunted by the devil / But what he doesn’t know / He’s being hunted by me
The songs “Beastmode”, “Life is an Ocean”, and “If I Were The Devil” were the tracks that stood out the most for me. “Beastmode” is just about sharing the faith, in my opinion. The “Beastmode” they talk about is when we follow God’s way and asking other to join in. “Life is an Ocean” is really just song about how life isn’t always easy, but when things get rough and dark, Christ is the lighthouse that guides us home. “If I Were The Devil” has a message to set the story straight, that the devil just gives us a nudge and throws out the saying “the devil made me do it.”
This body is not my home / And these bones are not my own / So even though I lay here struggling for air / I do not fear, I do not fear
As I was listening to this album, I was worried how they would sound live, but after seeing a video of one of their shows, those worried were laid to rest. These dudes absolutely kill it live. It’s amazing what great bands come out of Minnesota. #CHUGLIFE
