Oh! Great is Our God

Three weeks ago I had never heard of The Sing Team. I was listening to an All Sons & Daughters radio station on Spotify and on came “Oh! Great is Our God!” – this EP’s title track. I am a huge fan of The Welcome Wagon on Sufjan Steven’s label Asthmatic Kitty Records, and The Sing Team has a similar 70’s gospel oriented sound. They are one of fourteen bands on the new Mars Hill Music Record Label, and they are right at home. Their simple, creative profession of the Gospel fits right in with Mars Hill’s “It’s all about Jesus” mantra.

This EP, released in April 2012, has five tracks of pure folky gospel goodness, including a fun rendition of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” This album is filled with throwback instruments, creative riffs, and group vocals that invite you to sing along.

Every once in a while, an album brings you into the experience, and you feel as if you are in the room with the artists. The laid back analog-style recording of “Oh! Great is Our God!” is such an album. While I’m listening, I feel as if I am amidst family and friends having a sing songy great time worshiping our Lord.

If seventies folk gospel sounds like something up your alley, I highly suggest this album. I look forward to what The Sing Team comes out with next, and hopefully soon!

I've been doing some form of ministry since 2000. For 13 years I was involved in the youth ministry at Cordova Neighborhood Church as everything from youth intern to youth pastor. God has led me and my lovely wife Bethany to Church of the Foothills where I currently reside as the Digital Publishing Coordinator. I'm excited to see where God leads my wife and I.
