No Sleep

There aren’t many bands that stand out above the rest, but when it comes to Los Angeles band Volumes… You’ve got another thing coming. First finding enormous success after their 2011 release Via, Volumes has been paving their own road to success for the past few years. Since Via, I’ve had the pleasure of watching these guys perform in different cities, and were well-received in both instances. Their distinct sound is unlike any other due to the combination of groove and metal in their songs. With their newest effort No Sleep, Volumes has brought out both of those qualities to a fuller extent in each song and capitalizes on Micheal Barr’s hidden talent.

No Sleep has definitely been one of my most anticipated albums of 2014, and, after the first listen I was not disappointed. As a band Volumes captures two things that I like in my music: heavy riffs and fantastic melody. With each song they prove to other bands that you don’t have to forfeit one for the other. Volumes seamlessly switches from heavy-hitting tracks to catchy melodies with ease. Songs like “The Mixture,” and “91367” showcase the band’s groovy metal side, whereas “Erased” has hands-down some of the best melodies and clean singing of 2014. What is more surprising is that Micheal Barr (vocals) really takes the spotlight on this release providing the cleans on No Sleep. Prior to this release, Volumes would perform one song {live} from Via that required singing, but the vocalists would just scream the lyrics. This time around Barr demonstrates his versatility on songs like “Vahle,” and “Erased.”

Loved ones
Afterlife is something that you think about
When you’re caught up in that moment
That moment you don’t wanna dream about

There aren’t any dull moments on this release, and I believe listeners will be thoroughly satisfied when its over. Volumes proves that they deserve to be amongst the greats in the scene. Without a doubt, No Sleep is easily a contender for album of the year. Download their newest release on iTunes!
