This album seems to be a mashing of two different bands. The first is a Christian Synth-metal band similar to Three Days Grace. The other is a techno-pop band with an occasional guitar riff thrown in. I completely hated this album the first time I listened to it. This band has talent, but, in my opinion, they changed up their style too much throughout the album. Typically, bands have a basic sound they follow throughout an album with small tweaks here and there. From Water to War on the other hand switches from metal to pop randomly, which is something I just didn’t quite understand. Though, in fairness, Nine Lashes is one of those bands that can truly do it well.
Take the pain I hold / It’s crying out to be the end of me / But I can’t hear the sound.
The stand out track for me is “Break the World.” It is about someone lost in a dark place and ready to die. This really hits home for me. I have such a heart for people who are here because I’ve been there as well. After listening to Nine Lashes I can declare that I am now a fan. Despite the fact that at times their electronics somewhat overpower the rock elements of their album, Jeremy Dunn can sound just like Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace), which is something I highly respect. I’ve tried and failed at this many times. I wish Jeremy would use that ability more. This band is very well put together.
Cause I become a desperate soul / When Your unfailing love feels far / I need to know You won’t let go / Through it all You can have my broken heart / Everything that’s left in me / And I will surrender / Surrender, surrender
This is actually a really great album. I was planning to give this album a horrible review, but it seems God had another plan as usual and this album really ministered to me. I suggest this band to anyone who is willing to give it a chance. I promise it will grow on you.
