Death Sentence

After “Unholy Anger,” Those Who Fear was the band to watch out for. With unrelenting passion and aggression, their music has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. Heavy-hitting drums, low-tuned guitars, and raw vocals pervade their new release, Death Sentence.

Their sophomore release is said to “give voice to weighty personal and societal issues,” like the innocence of youth and how that changes over time.

Nothing could ever get close to me
Back when I was bruised and young

Death Sentence also covers topics such as internal convictions, and the downfall of pride. In “Ego Trip,” John Healy (vocals) speaks of pride and its consequences. This track also features Ryan Kirby of Fit For a King.

But when pride comes / Then disgrace comes
You’re no better than me
Pride comes before destruction / Pride comes before the fall

These lyrics fit perfectly with the tone of the album, and the music’s progression. With the addition of Jacob Wilder as the new drummer, TWF was free to diversity their range on Death Sentence, and the result is phenomenal. Aside from the abundance of heavy riffs, the guitarists have added more intricate leads to accompany the rhythms. This helps to expand their range as a band, and adds some really gritty sections.

The production on this release is also worth mentioning. Returning engineer Josh Schroeder has teamed up with TWF on this release, and helped bring out something special on Death Sentence. The effects on the guitars, the DJ-sounding scratches on “Saturday Night Special,” and other small enhancements to the songs make the album really stand out.

All in all, fans of heavy hardcore will really enjoy Those Who Fear‘s latest endeavors. Death Sentence, from front to back, is one of the heaviest Christian albums you’ll hear in 2014. The songs weave in and out of each other, and never relent on the breakdowns.

Review in a Tweet:
