Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?

Wayfarer started out as a side project of secular Sherwood a San Luis Obispo California-based alternative rock band member Dan Koch. His main goal in starting this project was to recreate old-style hymns for a new generation. Instead of making them CCM Koch turned to indie folk influences harking back to the ’60s and ’70s hippy movement. Later on new members joined the band and now they are releasing The River. “Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?” is the first single of the EP.

This song along with the rest of the EP will probably turn some heads: think mewithoutyou meets The Carpenters. Wayfarer takes hymns and makes them enjoyable again literally transforming them into a song anybody that likes music would listen to. While I Don’t think this is as strong a song as past material which they have leaked I do think it is worth picking up especially for free. Yes “Alas and Did My Savior Bleed?” is available for free on Noisetrade. The whole EP is rumored to be being released for free on July 22.

Now that Sherwood has broken up this has become the main project of front man Dan Koch. I could tell they put a lot of effort into rethinking how they wanted the song to sound. It made me appreciate the music a lot more. I think if they pushed the rest of the EP to be as ground-breaking in the hymn world then this band is something to watch. Most “Christian” websites will probably overlook this album but as for Christcore you can expect a full review of the album as soon as it comes out.

4/5 Stars: Great band from the Pacific Northwest creating interesting and praise-worthy tunes.

*I can’t guarantee this band is “Christian”. Sorry! They just play hymns.
