Behold the Kingdom : The Eyes Of The Wicked Will Fail
RATING: (7 out of 10) RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2011 LABEL: Rottweiler Records REVIEWED ON: October 21st, 2011 REVIEWED BY: Brian MorrissetteREVIEW
Deathcore bands are a dime a dozen nowadays. It is extremely hard for bands in this genre to stand out. Behold the Kingdom is another band trying to get people’s attention in a overstuffed genre. They recently signed to punk rock/hardcore start-up label Rottweiler Records. On Rottweiler, Behold the Kingdom released their first record, The Eyes Of The Wicked Will Fail. The question that immediately came to mind after the start of the first song, “We Are Zion (Prayer Of The Messiah)," was, “What is going to make this band shine through millions of other bands?" I will answer this question right now: nothing. This doesn't mean that this band or album is bad but that you shouldn't expect anything new. If you were expecting something fresh, then you might want to look in another place. Now, if you're into deathcore or hardcore music, then read on.
Behold the Kingdom takes the majority of their musical cues from Impending Doom, The Chariot, and August Burns Red. Their music also tends to lean towards '90s hardcore thrash metal like The Crucified. Joseph Bellmer's vocals aren't immediately "anything to write home to grandma about" and don't break any boundaries. They are, however, tight and fit this style well. The guitar quarter of Derrik Young and Riley Snyder complements and plays off of Joseph's vocal type. The drums on this album drive the rest of the music on a blazing fast pace with little-to-no slow parts. The nice thing is every little bit and piece melds together well; the only problem is the album overall is only good. It isn't anything special or miraculous. It's just average.
Since I don't have a lyric booklet, I won't spend too much time on the meanings behind the songs. The one thing I have to say is that this band has a good heart for God and this album reflects that.
If you are looking for a new brutal, honest deathcore band, then look no further than Behold the Kingdom. If you're not, you're not. Behold the Kingdom's The Eyes Of The Wicked Will Fail is an above-average album. In this album they show room to grow and talent to be able to fill that space. After this rant the question probably on your mind is whether this album is worth purchasing or not. My answer to this question is yes. Yes, you should buy it if you are a fan of any of the above mentioned bands. I don't, however, expect this album to end up on my top ten metal albums of the year.
3 1/2/5 Stars: Good, fast, hard deathcore metal. Behold the Kingdom is a band to keep in mind in the future. For now The Eyes Of The Wicked Will Fail is worth picking up.
