Do you think it's important to know how to play an instrument to know how to write songs? I write songs but i can't play the guitar, which is aggravating and a real downer sometimes. My friends and i are trying to start a band, and it's really hard to communicate my ideas to them. It took us 2 months to get 1 song almost finished. Any ideas?
I would be lying if I said it didn't help. I guess I would need to know what you mean in "knowing how to play." If by that you mean you can't play any chords, that can make the process very difficult, if by that you mean you don't know theory or music reading that is easier to work with. If you problem is not being able to play chords in general, I just suggest practicing. It takes some time but there are tons of youtube videos that can show you guitar basics and with a little determination you will get it in no time. Just push through the aggravation. I myself am in a band and can't read music for the life of me and know little to no music theory and I have still been able to write songs. Sure knowing those things would make song writing easier for me, but I have found a way to manage and think I have come up with some pretty decent stuff. I know how it is to get a little down on myself for my lack of ability I just push through and practice. I think you will do fine if you practice.
