Final Girl is a small stylish indie horror thriller by first time film director Tyler Shields. The film stars Wes Bentley (We Are Your Friends), Abigail Breslin (Zombieland) and Logan Huffman (The Hunger Games) along with a few other unknowns. The premise is simple a group of four guys hunt young girls for sport. Wes Bentley plays a man who lost his wife to men like these and is out for revenge. Apparently this is a thing people do commonly around these parts… He mentors Breslin’s character to be the perfect bait for these boys in a story where the hunters become the hunted. It’s a pretty basic revenge survival horror setup with plenty of style and character. And, though I enjoyed this film there were a lot of elements that were lack luster. Primarily that is found in three of the four boys and cinematography which though nice often seem out of place. As for their characters, they were too… cartoonish and over the top, especially Logan Huffman’s character Danny. In the end however Abigail Breslin’s character was likable, tough and a good “final girl” to root for.
Final Girl is an overly stylized mess with an overarching story that doesn’t really matter but the fight for survival made it a worthwhile watch.
