Watchers and Hunters

I had a chance to talk with the guitarist for Gilroy’s own Watchers and Hunters today. Watchers and Hunters is a Christian Hardcore band from central CA with a heart for people hardcore and God. A pretty dangerous combination.

Alfie: Hey my name is Aflredo Tovar but everyone calls me Alfie. My bands name is called watchers and hunters i play guitar and do some back up vocals

Bryce: Who else is in the band just so we can show a little love to them as well.

Alfie: At the moment there is only 3 of us Mark is the vocalist Shane plays the other guitar. We had a bassist and a drummer and key board player but they all left todo there own thing

Bryce: How has that effected your writing process? I know you were trying to get a new CD out by this summer?

Alfie: It actually hasn’t effected to much me and shane write the songs and mark writes the lyrics so when they left we just kept writing

Bryce: Every band has a different process for song writing. how do songs generally start out for Watchers and Hunters?

Alfie: Shane and I work differently when it comes to writing songs generally he has to plan out the whole song then once he has it planned out in what he wants he starts writing the drums and recording we always write our songs on a computer it’s guitar and not everyone has top be around. I generally have an idea and work my way from there kinda spontaneous

Bryce: I am similar to you in that way. I take it verse by verse line by line. So your songs our written musically and then you adapt the lyrics later?

Alfie: Thats generally how it goes. Mark writes songs by himself a lot them he just works them into our songs which is pretty cool.

Bryce: What is the status for release on your new CD? I noticed their is a new music teaser up and the stuff sounds legit. Is their a release date or name yet?

Alfie: We are currently working on vocals and samples our drums are done guitars are done. Then mixing and mastering. We are shooting to have it done in about 2 months cause we are getting art work and getting it pressed and we want enough time to promote. As for the new stuff there won’t be a release date for awhile. We plan on getting them finished and playing them live for awhile then we’ll record them later on down the road.

Our old drummer originally recorded the drums but after he left we decided to get someone else to record the drums who was more solid so we asked derek from All or Nothing to record them for us and he agreed todo so. I’ve been friends with derek since 7th grade so naturally he was down.

Bryce: So the CD you are planning to release in about 2 months are songs previously released but recorded reworked and refined?

Alfie: Yes all songs on this EP are re-recorded due to the fact that our old recordings were midi drums. We gave updated the songs a bit as well: different chord progressions and better lyrics Mark felt like he could improve what he had to say.

Bryce: Awesome. Is there a name yet for the new EP?

Alfie: Yes actually the EP is called “Fallen but not Forgotten.” It’s based around Jesus dying for our sins and how we shouldn’t forget thatand for us to give Him all His praise. It’s what has been on our hearts since we started this band.

Bryce: When I spoke with Laz he gave me a rundown on the organization the Whosoever’s I noticed you were also involved with the movement. Is there anything you would like to share about what God is doing through their ministry?

Alfie: I became a part of them when I toured with All or Nothing and I played a show with them when the opened for P.O.D. We are a family who just pray hard for each other and other people. Praying hard helps out so much i know it helps me. So just being able to pray hard for someone means so much.

Bryce: I have noticed the more you pray for people the more you begin to notice others needs. Not to mention prayer is a powerful action and we have a God who answers them.

Alfie: It is a blessing as a band we like to have Bible studies and pray As a band we put God’s will first and then the band It’s cool. All or nothing joins us when they are free.

Bryce: it’s all about the fellowship of believers! After all we are made in God’s image God is constantly in fellowship we should be no different.

Alfie: thats the way it is i believe we all have to support each other in our walk with God

Bryce: Yeah that’s nice. I always have fun with this next question. What are your 5 fav artists right now?

Alfie: You would think I’m all in to Hardcore or Metal but I’m really into Mumford and Sons Family Force five In the midst of lions For today it prevails sovereign strength. So metal / hardcore but most of the time i change it up.

Bryce: That’s why I like this question… I half expected you to say City and Colour and Eisley. You just never know. I figure the more diverse your musical preference the more you have to bring to the table

Alfie: I do like City and Colour alot and Eisley but Mumford and Sons got my attention like crazy right now thats true as for the band we all listen to different stuff its funny when we are all in the same car.

Ha… the beauty of iPod’s.

Alfie: so true

Bryce: I noticed from another interview that you are all trying to go somewhere with this band it’s not just another local band have you been shopping your CD around to any labels?

Alfie: Yes we are our first tour was in january which was a month long Just for being in a band for 3 months then touring was pretty fast and we notice people took us serious. At the moment we haven’t We just want todo things our selves at this moment in time and work from the ground up We want to build a good solid ground for us. A lot of band these days want to get signed but we just want to worship god and go into places where people don’t know god. But we are working with a management company Called MB management Run by Jeff Brannon he has got us endorsements with Toms Silver fox Upraor clothing Agape attire

Bryce: Awesome with the some of the connections you will be getting through touring the Whosoever’s and your endorsements God may be opening up some pretty cool doors in the future.

Alfie: MB is working with Take it Back(facedown records) and Thirtyseven (Blood and Ink records)

Bryce: That would be a nice door to have your foot in!

Alfie: Im sure God will opens doors and will also have us be patient and just keep working But its all in His plan and we are down for whatever He wants us to do.

Bryce: Just keep pressing on and pursuing Him. He will make your paths straight.

Bryce: What is one thing you want anyone who reads this interview to know?

Alfie: That God is real and anything is possible if you put God first. People have a problem doing that in these days.

Bryce: Finally what can people who read this be praying for you about? It is good for us to pray for others as well as receive prayers from others.

Alfie: That God works through us so we can bring people closer to the Lord and for them to hear His word.

Bryce: Okay will do. Thank you for your time Alfie it has been a pleasure getting to know you a little better. Any closing thoughts?

Alfie: Thank you so much and keep doing what your doing. Just to give your self to god and enjoy your walk with him. Also to check us out on tour this september with our friends the Kings Divide

Bryce: Awesome thanks again man have a great day!

thank you and god bless

” You would think I’m all in to Hardcore or Metal but I like to change it up on occasion. I’m really into Mumford & Sons Family Force 5 In the Midst of Lions For today It Prevails Sovereign Strength. We are a family who just pray hard for each other and other people. Praying hard helps out so much i know it helps me. “
