Forget about God's will for your life
We live in a society that plans.  In our society we tend to have 5-year, 10-year, and 20-year plans for ourselves, our families and our faith.  Because of this we like to plan ahead.  People choose their professions, their schools, write out their wills, and get life insurance so that they can rest in the knowledge that they know what’s coming.  I believe this has bridged over into our faith as well.  We want to plan out our lives as Christians.  We want to make sure that our life of faith goes smoothly and with little surprise.  So we ask this huge

Fear the Lord!... ?
I enjoy Francis Chan.  He seems to be grounded in the word and straightforward and challenging in his teaching.  Recently while preparing for youth group, I watched a short devotional video by Francis entitled “Basic : Fear God.”  This is a devotional based off of that video.  I am not wholly convinced by his words, but I do see a validity to them, and they have challenged me to look at my preconceived ideas of what “fearing God” means and see what the Bible says.  Francis’ basic premise is that when scripture says “fear God,&rdqu

When God Calls Us To Wait
“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning.” Psalm 130:5-6       “Waiting on the Lord” is a commonly used phrase within the Christian community, but I am finding that it is a phrase many of us know and use but do not really know how to actually do. The truth is, we are human; we are of a fallen nature. We live a life that fights the daily battle between flesh and soul. Waiting on the Lord while livi

A Beautiful Conviction
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” Colossians 2:6-8   We live in a world that is constantly trying to influence the way we think, act and feel. At times, it can be the most challenging thing to look at what those

Hypocritical Me
“And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He Said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.” - Exodus 3:14 (NKJV) So much I find today in our society that we don't want to just believe. We have to have some sort of proof to be able to prove our case to the masses. But what God was telling Moses was that all you need to know is that I AM WHO I AM. As curious humans we don't like to be told something just is. We like to know the why's and how's. I'll be the first to say that I'm just like this. I need

Who needs Jesus?
This message does not come from a place of piety or self-righteousness but is delivered to you with a heavy heart.  Over the years in ministry I have become acutely aware of the drift away from a transforming relationship with Christ and reverence for God's word.  I desire that we as believers would get on our knees, recognize our errors, repent, elevate Scripture to its rightful place, and allow the transforming work of the Holy Spirit to overtake us again. ===================   "For the time will come [and is now here] when they will not endure sound do

Choking Ourselves
My wife and I have a new puppy.  Her name is Abby, short for Abacus.  Abby is a Wirehaired Terrier Schnauzer mix.  She is small but not annoying, full of energy but likes to snuggle, and very loving.  I try to take her on two or three short walks around our complex a day.  She loves being outdoors and is constantly running to smell every bush.  Unfortunately, she is running in place because Abby weighs 12 pounds and I weigh in at around 220, making it difficult for her to make any headway.  Abby will often bolt away from me and get yanked back when her lea

Confessions of the Lukewarm
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. Revelation 3:15-17 I think many of us can appreciate this statement.  Who likes a lukewarm soda or, dare I say it, beer.  How many of us enjoy listening to noncommital love songs, "I lo

Our Identity
This is a repost from a website called GotQuestions.org.  The question was asked "How should we live our lives in light of our identity in Christ?"  I was very encouraged and challenged by the answer.  When I look over this Biblical answer of the response we are to have to the Spirit of Christ in us, I realize how far I have to go, but I am thankful that I am on the path.  I hope that you can read this and be encouraged as I was. =============================================== Our identity in Christ is first and foremost is one of newness. We are new cr

Colossians 2:16-17 "17 For these rules were only shadows of the real thing, Christ himself." What we see isn't all there is.  This is something that has been on my heart a lot lately.  I'm not a guy that harps on the media all the time.  I love music, tv and movies as much as the next person, but lately I've been frustrated.  There is so much stuff being "sold" to us as reality on a day-to-day basis, and it's so far off that they are but a shadow of the reality they attempt to profess. The people who lived through the birth o
