Mar 8th | I'm sooo humble...
"The person who is greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." - Matthew 23:11-12
I?m currently busy devouring a book by C.S. Lewis called ?The Screwtape Letters?, it?s basically a fictional novel about two demons, an older demon writing letters to his nephew, instructing him on how to get his ?patient? (i.e. a human) to sin, etc. One letter on the subject of humility was of particular interest to me and I?d like to share it with you guys.
Let?s start by looking at how we usually think ? I?l[ READ MORE | Posted on: March 8th, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Mar 5th | Mowing the lawn
I remember as a little kid, (6 or 7 years old) the first time my dad "allowed" me to mow the lawn (not knowing I would regret it for the next 10 years). What I remember more distinctly is my mom completely flipping out when she saw the condition of the lawn when I was done. Let's just say it was a disaster. But she wasn't angry at me, she thought my father mowed the lawn! He defended himself and told her that I was the culprit, and I just stood there, knowing I messed up, but feeling a little disgusted because I actually wanted to help! I didn't need to say anything. | | Mar 4th | Renew Your Mind
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is?his good, pleasing and perfect will." - Romans 12:2
What are the patterns of this world. I mean there are so many to list I tried to pick some that are pretty broad and general and that include a lot of people. This world is gross for lack of a better term. It's all about me, it's all about what I like, what feels good. This world couldn't be more off as to what it is supposed to be like, I hope t[ READ MORE | Posted on: March 4th, 2010 PST | By: Bryce Cooley]
| | Mar 1st | Role model, me!?
A thing I've been thinking about more and more lately: what exactly qualifies me two write devotionals and try to lead people to God? Who am I that anyone should listen to me regarding getting closer to God, when I myself feel like I'm running through a dark forest, looking for just a glimpse of light? I realize that I'm under qualified, inexperienced and sometimes (most times?) just plain selfish. Who am I to be a role model? I never chose to be one in the first place. (Not that I think anyone out there in internet land looks up at me or anything, but there's some kids at c[ READ MORE | Posted on: March 1st, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Dec 31st | Don't be plastic Part 2
The past 3 days has been really surreal to me, partly because I've been at home fighting a tummy bug (I'll skip the details) and partly because of a book I started reading in this time. The book is "Simplicity", written by Mark Salomon, the vocal of Stavesacre and serves as an explanation why these guys do not play in the so called "Christian market" anymore. It's difficult to explain the range of emotions I'm going through while reading this book (I'll try not to be too dramatic). This guy makes soooo many good observations that it actually scares me[ READ MORE | Posted on: December 31st, 1969 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Feb 27th | I are Baboon?
This past Saturday morning I had a chat with a friend who shared something really cool with me, and I decided to share it with you guys.
He told me that the previous evening while getting ready for bed, he walked into his room and stepped in a thorn that was lying on the carpet. He had no idea how it got there, but nonetheless had the same reaction as most of us, jumping around on one foot, trying to keep his yelling down due to his parents already being asleep, while still fighting to maintain his balance while attempting to get the thing out of his foot.
After getting back his com[ READ MORE | Posted on: February 27th, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Feb 24th | Rock Hard!
Earlier this week I discovered a very cool passage in the Bible and I think I will dedicate this devo to each and every Christian muso out there as well as all aspiring ones. Check out Psalm 33:1-3 (KJV)
(1) Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. (2) Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. (3) Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.
Check out verse 3; "...play SKILLFULLY with a LOUD NOISE." How cool is this! Our God is definitely not a boring God and He wishes us t[ READ MORE | Posted on: February 24th, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Feb 22nd | The Devil's Nightmare It's quite funny how God works sometimes. The undertone of this devo was going to be quite different, but a moment before submitting it I got a call from a good friend and after a 30 minute conversation I decided to change this devo.
About 4 weeks ago me and a group of friends starting witnessing in our local shopping malls, just talking to random people about God and asking them if they know Jesus and if they would go to heaven when they die. It is a lost easier than you might think; we got chased away by security only once so far :) But I guess it comes with the job. I live in a relativel[ READ MORE | Posted on: February 22nd, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Feb 17th | I hate divorce...
"I hate divorce," says the GOD of Israel. - Mal 2:16
Plain and simple. God hasn't changed in the few thousand years since He said this to Malachi (Heb 13:8), so what or who has? This is the second in a series of topics I would like to deal with about how people are starting to believe whatever they want to believe and how certain sins are now "acceptable". I already dealt with premarital sex (check out the devo "Drawing the line" in the archives), others I will deal with are abortion and homosexual relationships.
How many professing Christians these[ READ MORE | Posted on: February 17th, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
| | Feb 14th | Righteous are you?
Why should you go to heaven? Because you are a good person? What are you measuring yourself against? In comparison to Hitler I look like a saint, but how do I measure up against God?s law, the measure to be used when we die? I am about to prove that no one has kept as much as 1 of the 10 commandments, and one day, you will stand in front of God as a lying, thieving, covetous, adulterous, rebellious, blaspheming, idol worshipping murderer. That is, if you do not accept the sacrifice of Jesus. Let?s see what the Bible means with "There is none righteous, no, not one:" (Rom 3:10) and[ READ MORE | Posted on: February 14th, 2010 PST | By: Riaan Du Plessis]
