Comic book movies are always on our minds these days, and we have the latest news on many developing films in one, condensed article!
Could Spider-Man appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
What many adoring fans of the MCU don’t realize is that putting Spider-Man on the big screen with Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man is almost impossible. Why is it impossible? Well, some of Marvel’s major titles were separated amongst the largest studios, back in the day. Marvel Studios owns the film rights to Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and many other smaller characters. Sony holds the rights to one of the biggest Marvel names: Spider-Man. Fox owns the rights to X-Men and The Fantastic Four. This means that, at the moment, Marvel could never put Spider-Man into their films because they do not own the rights to that character. Recently, this impossibility has come into question. Sony is apparently hurting financially and may now be willing to discuss selling the property to Marvel. While there are no confirmed reports of talks between the two studios, fans all over the world can hold onto some hope that our friendly neighborhood web-slinger will one day join the Avengers onscreen.
“Deadpool” film in development
Fans of Marvel comics will surely be familiar with the character Deadpool. He’s a witty and obscene character that packs quite a punch. After Ryan Renolds’ butchered performance of this risqué antihero in X-Men Orgins: Wolverine, it was rumored that he would return to portray the character in a solo film, but it just hasn’t come to fruition… Until now. The studio has publicly confirmed that a Deadpool film is in the works and is slated for an early 2016 release. The decision was most likely prompted by fan reactions after leaked test footage of a Deadpool film circulated the Internet, featuring Ryan Renolds as the voice actor. He isn’t confirmed to voice Deadpool at the moment, but he is expected to sign on at some point.
Robert Downey, Jr. and Iron Man 4
Robert Downey, Jr. has been the poster child for Marvel’s cinematic universe, but will we continue to see him in the Iron Man suit? For those of you who may not know, Downey is only contracted for two more films, one of them being Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. With only one film left, would RDJ make another Iron Man film or another Avengers film? The thought of not seeing Tony Stark on the big screen for 2-3 years in an Avengers film may alarm some, but RDJ recently made some public comments about his future with Marvel. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Downey essentially confirmed his involvement with Iron Man 4 but later, in an interview with David Letterman, changed his tune.
There’s no script for Iron Man 4 but they do have a plan… I think they’re going to announce it – they’re very secretive about it.
Is RDJ really saying that there will be no more Iron Man films? We can only speculate at this point, but he did go on to comment on his future with Marvel.
… I’m going to do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there is going to be plenty of fun stuff to happen.
Speculation has already begun surrounding his comments. Could Marvel be planning a special film, with RDJ involved? Could that be a Civil War movie?
The Civil War storyline is an interesting conflict in the comics between Captain America and Iron Man, which causes the Avengers team to be split up. Some heroes side with Cap, some side with Tony Stark. This would definitely make for an interesting film, but only time will shed more light on this topic.
First look at “Daredevil” at NYCC
A new ‘Daredevil’ series has been in the works, and audiences at New York Comic Con were among the first to see Charlie Cox as “the man without fear.” The hero’s suit isn’t what many will remember from Ben Affleck’s Daredevil film, but it does look pretty sleek. There’s not much to be said about the upcoming series; Marvel recently launched the new site for the show and we can expect the Netflix exclusive in 2015.
