Christcore refers to heavy metal, hardcore, or a mix of both that use lyrics that honor God. The bands in this genre of Christian music have reached more lost souls then most other styles of Christian music. Bands in this genre use a vocal technique called “screaming,” which refers to the loud , scratchy, and angry sounding voice that is normally only found in this genre and its secular counterpart. This “screaming” is what turns most people, Christian or not, away when it comes to this music, but the few that enjoy it probably have lived in some rather dark areas of life. There’s a reason for that: this music is usually directed at people living dark lives, possibly even dabbling in Satanism.
The “screaming” in this music is mostly used for emotional emphasis and to match the brutality of the instruments. Many people say this “screaming” is nonsense and that it doesn’t take much talent; on the contrary, I have been teaching myself how to “scream” for five years, and I’m still learning. If you listen closely and take the time to read lyrics along with the songs, the lyrics these artists write will blow your mind. They use pent up frustration and anger to make some amazing lyrics about some true life stories of what God has done in their lives.
There is real passion behind this music, and many people don’t give it the credit it deserves. People even write it off as demonic when, in the case of Christcore, it is much to the contrary. The men and women in these bands are some of the Godliest people I know. Don’t worry I’m not telling you that you have to listen to it – I’m just saying give credit where credit is due.
