Where Life Was Meant to be Lived

I recently finished reading a book entitled, The Gutter by Craig Gross (co-founder of xxxchurch.com). His book is a call to arms for all believers and followers of Christ. What’s the Gutter? Good question. The gutter is exactly what it sounds like. The nasty, vile, disgusting, blaspheming, most sinful or deprived places you can imagine. Places that the love of Christ isn’t being shared.

The Gutter is a place that most “Christians” wouldn’t suggest going to. Instead, we need to stay in our nice, warm, comfortable, safe churches. If we are indeed “Christians? or, the term I prefer, followers of Christ’s, we ought to be living a life as close to his as possible, right? Right. Good answer.

Read the gospels. Do it. Where was Christ’s ministry? Who did he spend his time with? Was in going around in places of ‘safe? Jewish culture? Was he in the temples all day long ministering to other Jews, those who had faith prior to his witnessing? NO!

Christ was born in the Gutter, lived in the Gutter, ministered and witnessed in the Gutter, and died in the Gutter.

?While Jesus was having dinner at Mathew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?? On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”? -Matthew 9: 10-13

Did you see that? Christ, himself, said that his ministry wasn’t to the church goers, it was to those who were lost and in need of help, in need of salvation. I am in no way saying that Christians don’t need to be ministering to other Christians. What I am saying is that Christians need to get the crap out of the church and into the world.

“In the world but not of the world.” Sounds completely cute and well said at out prayer meetings, in Sunday school, or on Wednesday night church, but that’s about as far as it goes for most of us. Ask yourself what it really means to be in the world but not of it. What does that look like? Examples? this exact website. Reaching communities. Adapting Christ’s love and teaching to modern arenas and socials scenes. Another good one is one I already mentioned, xxxchurch.com. If you haven’t been there you should check it out. After all, it is the #1 Christian Porn Site. How about Christian bands? There are so many ways that Christ can impact our society through you by just going out and getting into the Gutter.

I've been doing some form of ministry since 2000. For 13 years I was involved in the youth ministry at Cordova Neighborhood Church as everything from youth intern to youth pastor. God has led me and my lovely wife Bethany to Church of the Foothills where I currently reside as the Digital Publishing Coordinator. I'm excited to see where God leads my wife and I.
