The Foolishness of God

That is an interesting concept to think about. "The foolishness of God" talked about in 1st corinthians 1. Just so folks don't think I am crazy let me quote it. 1 Corinthians 1:25 "the foolishness of God is wiser than men." It is really hard to think of a sovereign and holy God as foolish so let me see if I can give you a couple examples.

The Story of Jonah (brief summary).
Jonah was a prophet in the Old testament, God told him to preach his word to the city of Ninevah. Ninevah was an enemy of Jonah's people so he didn't want to and he ran from God (rather impossible I might add). Anyways, God has him swallowed by a "great fish" often referred to as "the big fish". He then is spit up on the shores of Ninevah preaches God's word to them and they repent. To many people this may sound to far fetched to have every happened, and why would he have him swallowed by a fish in the first place. This is where God's "foolishness" is wiser than man, the Ninevites worshipped a god named dagon (forgive spelling errors), dagon translated means "the big fish god". Now imagine this, they find this man who has just been sent to them in the belly of "their God" to tell them a word from his God, who apparantley has control over their "god". That is very much something that would have got their attention.

Saul to Paul
Saul aka Paul is another example to me of the foolishness of God. Here is a man that became known as a persecutor and killer of Christians. Dragging them from their houses, putting them in Jail (Acts 8:3), putting them to death (Acts 1:8). In most peoples opinion not the most likely candidate to further God's kingdom. But alas her comes God's foolishness again ravaging the wisdom of man. Through Paul's conversion on the damascus road (Acts 9) we get over half of the new testament. Some of the most powerful and pivotal scripture on the Christian life in the bible. Paul was a walking testimony of the grace of our God, the God that can save murderers, prostitutes, rapists, tax collectors and the like. God knew exactly what he was doing when he approached Paul on Damascus road that day.

The Cross
Yes, that is right the cross where Jesus was crucified. Now a lot of people may have trouble thinking of this as foolishness. After all it is through Christ's sacrifice on the cross that we are redeemed. This is very true, let me explain. 1 Corinthians 1:23 "But we preach Christ crucified to Jews a stumbling block and to the Gentiles foolishness." The Jews of this time believed the savior was going to be a mighty leader. After all they had a long lineage of rulers, David, Solomon etc. In comes Jesus, the son of a Carpenter, a man from very lowly beginnings in the end he is crucified as a criminal. How could he every be a savior? This just made no sense to them. The Gentiles, in this case the Roman empire were very into knowledge and fact. So the idea to them that this mans death could bring about any form of salvation really made no sense. Yet through this sacrifice of his son God has saved us all. He has bridged the gap between us through his son, he has given us the Holy Spirit "That if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved." Romans 10:9

You and Me
Now a lot of people not really understand how the foolishness of God really matters. But it is huge to us as Christians because we are part of it. I will take myself for an example. Sure people could say I was a good guy, nice by most peoples accounts, but they don't know my heart. They don't know the hidden sins, the hidden struggles, anger, hate, lust etc. But God does know all that, yet he still chose me, he still knows me by name. Why would he use someone as insignificant and flawed as me, Bryce Cooley from Rancho Cordova, CA. That doesn't make sense. But God has a purpose for every single one of my flaws that through them he could be glorified. Not to say I am perfect in anyway but upon receiving the Lord many of my flaws went away, I stopped cussing, the joy I had returned to my life upon many other things. And people noticed, people asked and I was able to let them know what God did for me. Through me God has been able to create this website that it may reach people at the moment in their life that they are searching and need to know that he cares for them. I am her to tell you that he does. God sent his son Jesus Christ down to earth to die on the cross for YOUR sins. If you were the last person left on this earth he would have done the same thing because he loves you that much. There is nothing you could every do to stop God from loving you, I don't care what you have done God loves you. Through God's foolishness I was able to type to you this message.

Pretty foolish huh?
