"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)
Have you ever took the time to sit back, close your eyes and think about what you believe about you eternal salvation? Believe me, when you start sharing your faith with others, you quickly realize how weird the message of the gospel is. It's strange, but as a kid you don't have problem with it, heck you believe in the tooth-fairy and Santa clause, so Adam & Eve, Noah's Ark, David & Goliath and finally Jesus Christ just makes sense when you’re a child.
But then you grow up, and suddenly you’re faced with the reality of your faith. If you find a 24 year old who honestly believes in Santa or the tooth-fairy, you will laugh at the guy. What about someone who believes in someone who was birthed from a virgin, died on a cross, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven on a cloud? It just sounds bizarre! But oh man? OUR GOD IS SOOO WISE! It recently dawned on me why God chose to do it this way. I believe this is why Jesus says in Matthew 18:3-4 that we must become like children, specifically humble like little children.
?But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;? 1 Corinthians 1:27
That's why the gospel is such a strange message! That's why the Bible looks like a stupid children's story book to unbelievers. That's why humans seek “logical? (human-wisdom) solutions to things they don't understand. That's why they have the theory of evolution, etc. Creation makes sense to someone who humbles himself and takes God word at face value, but 'the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him? (1 Cor 2:14) I personally believe people don't really have a problem with creation, it's the rest of the Bible they have problem with. I think it was Mark Twain who said it's not the parts of the Bible that he doesn't understand that bothers him, but those parts he does understand.
?But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness;? 1 Corinthians 1:23 (KJV)
?For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” 1 Corinthians 3:19 (KJV)
It's all is about being humble. To believe in the message of the cross, is to humble yourself. God gave us the Bible, which is without error or contradiction. Admittedly, there are 'seeming? contradictions which arise when taking verses out of context, etc. But a child of God believes what His Father tells him, no matter how foolish it may sound. In 20 years from now the scientific theories which exist today will look like utter foolishness. How about the God's Word that's been going strong since the beginning of time?
But believing in God's Word is not a leap of blind faith. God has been so gracious that He gives the Holy Spirit to those that choose to humble themselves. He will guide you, help you make sense of it all. He lets you experience God in sometimes the smallest of things, but it's experiences that move you out of the realm of believing into the realm of knowing.
So keep the faith, if it sounds stupid, remember God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Also remember it's a heart, not a mind thing. If you do not have the Holy Spirit, it's just a matter of time before you fall away. Jesus said God will give you the Holy Spirit if you ask Him (Luke 11:13), if you have any doubts/fears go talk to your pastor. If you don't have one, find one you can trust. It's time for the body of Christ to re-assemble.
