If we have the light of Christ burning within us, it should be hard to “fall asleep” to the massive problems that plague this world – problems such as human trafficking, faithlessness, and suicide. What are we doing to proactively change the problems that we know go against what God has planned for us? I think Ephesians 5:8-20 says it best.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These times are evil, but shouldn’t that drive us onward even more to building Christ’s kingdom on earth? What are we doing as the body of Christ? What are we, as the body, doing to shine His light? We are made to be light in a dark world. Light spreads and blots out the darkness. Jesus gave us this mission when He said in Matthew 5:14-16:“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This is our personal mission statement. If we are truly followers of Christ, we should heed every word Christ said. Be the light and the voice for those who suffer unjustly due to sin. Reach out a helping hand to the less fortunate. We should give everything we can to anyone who needs it.
We need a revival in this world, let alone our country. Revival starts with one person deciding they won’t be like everyone else. Someone who decides they are going to make a difference. One person. Is it you?
