Last night I was thinking of a time nearly two years ago when we were throwing a graduation party for kids in the youth who graduated from a leadership class. It was a 50's theme. I was in charge of making invitations, so I stuck with the theme. I found some clip art (not cool, but whatever!) of a 50's clad couple dancing on a record. I downloaded a 50s font and made a little cheap but neat looking invitation. I took it the guy in charge and he said we weren't going to use it and instead went with a cheaper invitation.
Why did he not want me to use? Well, simply put, he said that since the girls skirt was flying a bit over her knee, we would be sending out a bad message. HOW ABSURD! But it happens.
This man did mean good intentions, but it was still absurd. Galatians 3 is most known for its opening statement: " O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth…" (Galatians 3.1a NKJV)
Many times we fall into the same sin. We are 'bewitched' into believing the law is what sets us free, when in fact, it is the very thing that places us into slavery.(Romans 6.14-15)
People have this habit of making foolish rules and regulations to follow, such as the man saying we could not use the invitation because the girls skirt was flying above the knee. Its so absurd and so foolish to keep placing ourselves into the bondage of what Christ set us free from.
I don't believe anyone would have fallen into sin if they saw this cartoon figure of a woman whose skirt was flying a bit over the knee, and believe me, it was just a bit over the knee. It was a weird regulation placed over the invitation by a man who thought it was wrong. What foolish regulation have we placed in our lives?
"10All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." 11Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." 12The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit." (Galatians 3.10-14 NLT)
We are free from living under foolish regulations placed on ourselves by ourselves. We do not live righteously through these things but foolishly. Rid yourself of foolish rules, absurd regulations, and ludicrous ideals that aren't Christ-minded nor Christ-willed. Rather, cover yourself with faith that brings righteousness.
"26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."(Galatians 3.26-29 NLT)
::sidenote::I recommend reading Galatians 3. It is a good chapter.::end sidenote::
